Book of Scarborians II
The people marveled
as a knight leading her horse
blew a loud, shrill horn.
Making her way through the crowd,
a fair attendant stopped her.
He asked, “See the signs?
All jousting contestants should
head to the stables.”
The knight replied, “This contest,
does it promise a reward?”
The man answered her,
“First place joins the Burgesses
for their castle feast.”
Before he could continue,
the knight bid her horse onward.
He said, “What a year!
Few arrive dressed like her while
playing a ram’s horn.”
Dismounting at the stables,
the knight signed her name—Elvie.
